Small Engines (e.g. chainsaws and lawnmowers)Small engines without alternators use magneto ignition systems. The engines with alternators usually use distributor or capacitive discharge ignition systems. General Technologies recommends using either the TA100 or GTC505 when working with small engines. The TA100 is economical and easy-to-use; it helps you set idles, and check for major spark issues. The GTC505 can help you find issues at particular RPMs, and gives you more information on how the ignition system responds to loads. The GTC505 is also good if you want a tool that will work on larger (automotive or marine) engines. |
Motorcycle EnginesModern motorcycle engines generally use coil-on-plug ignition systems (, often pencil-type modules). Older motorcycles used distributors or magnetos depending on their size and number of cylinders. General Technologies recommends the TA100 for people who are only working on vintage motorcycles, and the GTC505 for those who want to work on all kinds of bike. The TA100 is economical, and good for setting idles or checking for fouled plugs on magneto or distributor-type systems. The GTC505 works on all kinds of systems, and can help you diagnose complicated problems. |
Marine EnginesSmall marine engines (<25hp) generally use magneto ignition systems. Large, old marine engines use distributor ignition systems. Since 2015, larger marine engines have started to use coil-on-plug ignition systems. General Technologies recommends that marine engine technicians working on newer engines use the TA500 or GTC505. The GTC505 is best for technicians looking to do in-depth diagnostics, such as finding occasional misfires. The TA500 is good for less detailed work, like setting idle speeds and checking for fouled plugs. |
Automotive EnginesModern (gasoline) automotive engines are coil-on-plug based. Most cars manufactured before 2005 use distributor ignition systems, though there are also a few that used capacitive discharge systems. General Technologies recommends using a GTC505 for these applications, because it is compatible with COPs, and can help you diagnose occasional misfires. |
Returns Policy
You may return most new, unopened items within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. We'll also pay the return shipping costs if the return is a result of our error (you received an incorrect or defective item, etc.).
You should expect to receive your refund within four weeks of giving your package to the return shipper, however, in many cases you will receive a refund more quickly. This time period includes the transit time for us to receive your return from the shipper (5 to 10 business days), the time it takes us to process your return once we receive it (3 to 5 business days), and the time it takes your bank to process our refund request (5 to 10 business days).
If you need to return an item, simply login to your account, view the order using the 'Complete Orders' link under the My Account menu and click the Return Item(s) button. We'll notify you via e-mail of your refund once we've received and processed the returned item.
Shipping
We can ship to virtually any address in the world. Note that there are restrictions on some products, and some products cannot be shipped to international destinations.
When you place an order, we will estimate shipping and delivery dates for you based on the availability of your items and the shipping options you choose. Depending on the shipping provider you choose, shipping date estimates may appear on the shipping quotes page.
Please also note that the shipping rates for many items we sell are weight-based. The weight of any such item can be found on its detail page. To reflect the policies of the shipping companies we use, all weights will be rounded up to the next full pound.
