What does a fuel injection pressure regulator do?
The fuel pressure regulator is an engine management component that is found in one form or another on virtually all internal combustion engines. It is a component of the vehicle's fuel system, and as it's name implies, is responsible for regulating the pressure of the fuel flowing through the system.
The IPR Valve on your 7.3L FORD Powerstroke is responsible for controlling the pressure in the high-pressure oil system which in turn operates the fuel injectors. The IPR (injection pressure regulator) is located on the high pressure oil pump at the front of the engine's valley. Due to the high pressures they are responsible for controlling, the IPR valve o-rings are a VERY common failure which will in turn result in low oil pressure related symptoms such as:
- Poor idle
- Stalling
- No-start condition
While there are other potential causes, such as a failed IPR valve, the o-rings themselves are often at fault, and are much less expensive to replace. The IPR valve screen is another common failure. The screen may become plugged with debris and be collapsed by the flow of high pressure oil as it tries to flow through the restricted screen. A torn screen will allow debris to enter the IPR valve which may damage the valve.

Where is the fuel pressure regulator located?
On fuel injected, gasoline engines, typically the regulator is located at the end of the fuel rail, after all the injectors. Look for the supply line TO the injectors and follow it to where the return is located at the end of the fuel rail.
How do I know if my fuel pressure regulator is bad?
- Fortunately, there are a few common signs to look for that indicates that your vehicle's fuel pressure regulator may be going bad.
- Black Smoke Emitting from the Tailpipe
- Gasoline Runs Out of the Tailpipe
- Engine Not Running Smoothly
- Stalling Engine
- Issues When You Decelerate
What happens if a fuel pressure regulator goes bad?
A faulty fuel pressure regulator may cause the vehicle to experience misfires, a reduction in power and acceleration, and a drop in fuel efficiency. These symptoms can also be caused by a wide variety of other issues so having the vehicle properly diagnosed is highly recommended.
