Common Intake Manifold Problems

The most common problem with the intake manifold is a faulty gasket. Due to strain from heat and the resulting contraction and expansion, the gasket can get cracked. When you detect the intake manifold fails, first take out the gasket and check if there is a crack somewhere on it. And there are a few symptoms that can alert you.

Leaking Coolant

In some car, intake manifold gaskets also seal engine coolant. Naturally, it may lead to a coolant leak if this seal wears out. This will produce a distinct coolant smell, or get bad, you will notice steam, drips or puddles of coolant underneath the vehicle.

Engine Overheating

An overheated engine is a continuation of the coolant leaking problem. If the intake manifold gaskets leak coolant into the intake manifold, the engine may overheat without any visible external leaks.

The Loss in Engine Performance/Misfires

When intake manifold fails, the fuel and air ratio will be affected and causes engine performance issues such as misfires, a decrease in power and acceleration, and even stalling.

Bad Fuel Economy

Because of the number of misfires and the decreasing power of the engine, your engine is going to consume more fuel than normal. If you drive roughly the same distance every week, you might see your tank draining faster.
