Knowing how to identify the warning symptoms of bad shock Absorbers is vital to your driving safety.
There are two negatives to riding on worn-out automotive shocks:
1. Safety:
Worn struts result in longer stopping times and/or distances as the vehicle weight can shift (sometimes unexpectedly) during braking. This also negatively affects your ability to stay in control of your vehicle.
2. Wear On Other Parts:
Driving with bad struts accelerates the wear on tires, as well as other components of the suspension system, such as the springs.
7 Signs Of Worn Shock Absorbers And Struts
- 1. Instability at highway speeds.
- 2. Vehicle βtipsβ to one side in turns.
- 3. The front end dives more than expected during hard braking.
- 4. Rear-end squat during acceleration.
- 5. Tires bouncing excessively.
- 6. Unusual tire wear.
- 7. Leaking fluid on the exterior of shocks or struts.
Shock Absorber Replacement
Shock Absorber Remove
- Park your vehicle on a flat, hard and level surface with the parking brake applied.
- Place the wheel chocks around the wheels that will remain on the ground.
- Lift the vehicle. Place the jack stand under the factory lift point.
- Take some pressure off the suspension.
- Remove the shock mounting bolts using the appropriate socket or wrench. Remove the shock from the vehicle and discard.
Shock Absorber Installation
- Install the new shock and mounting bolts.
- Torque the mounting bolts to manufacture specifications.
- Remove the floor jack from under the suspension.
- Lower the vehicle back to the ground. Remove the wheel chocks.
- Test drive the vehicle.
Test Drive The Vehicle
- Listen for any noises such as squeaks or pops which may indicate that something was not tightened down correctly.
- If there are no noises, then you should notice that the vehicle rides much better than it previously did.
