5 steps to replace an Engine Mount
Step 1 Support the engine | Raise the car with floor jack, you may use a piece of wooden block in between the floor jack and engine oil pan. |
Step 2 Loosen the busted mount | Loosen the engine mount bolts and nuts using a long extension and universal joint. They’ll be tight, so if you are having trouble, apply penetrating spray lubricant before trying again. Remove busted mount. |
Step 3 Comparison | Compare the old and new mounts, ensure they are identically size and mounting point are accurate. |
Step 4 Install the new mount | Put in the replacement straight forward, torque mounting nuts and bolts. |
Step 5 Verify the repair | Lower and remove floor jack, remove car from jack stand, engage emergency parking brake and run through gears to check for excessive engine movement and vibration. |

Frequently asked questions about engine mount
Q1: What happens if engine mounts break?
A: The main function of engine mounts are ensuring the engine to attach securely in order to prevent vibration caused by engine operation from transmitting to car and units. Therefore, if the engine mounts are damaged, all vibrations and bumps will transmit to the car's body. This will affects driving comfort and shorten the working lifespan of some of the car parts.
Q2: Can you drive a car with a broken motor mount?
A: Technically you might be able to drive your car with a bad engine mounts, but it is dangerous. When the engine starts to move around, even just slightly, it can lead to engine issue, chassis/frame damaged and handling problem. If your engine mount are damaged completely instead of loose and cracked, it might cause the engine shift or bounce violently causing some of the parts fly off when you are driving at a high speeds.
Q3: Is it hard to change engine mounts?
A: The complexity of this procedures are depends on the vehicle’s design, engine bay layout as well as engine’s location of the part to be replaced. For example, upper mounts are located in a quite accessible area, so their replacement usually causes no troubles. To replace the lower mounts, you will have to support (jack up) the engine. You may refer to the “Steps to change engine mounts”, it will help you to tackle the replacement yourself.
Q4: Why do engine mounts go bad?
A: Over times, leading to the signs of rubber elements of the parts become harden, losing elasticity, and cracked. Exposure to oil, coolant, and other technical fluid speeds this process up. That is why leaks in the engine compartment may significantly reduce the service life of engine mounts. Moreover, the parts may break prematurely because of improper installation. Other factors detrimental to these components include aggressive driving style (manual transmission), driving on rough roads, accidents, and suspension malfunctions because of which the mounts have to work under increased loads.
Q5: How to know when to replace motor mounts? Any symptom of a bad / damaged motor mounts?
A: Impact noises / Significant vibrations / Misalignment – engine shift around or dropping to one side while you driving / Damaged fan belts or radiator hoses / Damaged to the engine
