Product Description
The Function of Valve Lifters
Valve lifters play a key role in the valvetrain of pushrod engines. A hydraulic tappet, also known as a hydraulic valve lifter or hydraulic lash adjuster, is a device for maintaining zero valve clearance in an internal combustion engine. The hydraulic lifter was designed to allow the valve train to operate with zero clearance—leading to quieter operation, longer engine life.
The hydraulic lifter in a car's engine uses oil pressure to adjust a plunger and take up all the clearance in the valve train. This helps to ensure less engine noise and longer reliability, due to less wear and tear.
Symptoms and Consequences of Failured Valve Lifters:
Symptoms
When the plunger inside of a lifter fails, it'll fail to maintain oil pressure and will remain in a collapsed state at all times, the lifter will fail to take up lash in the system, which causes parts inside to hammer against each other during initial contact. This hammering manifests as a very noticeable tapping that increases in volume and frequency with engine rpm. A bad lifter will throw off the affected cylinder's ability to move and burn air and fuel, which will typically lead to spark plug fouling and a miss on that cylinder.
Consequences
A collapsed lifter puts a great deal of stress on a vehicle's valve train. Collapsed lifters can easily bend pushrods, which will subsequently fall out of the space between the rocker arm and the top of the lifter. Once a push rod falls out of the space, the very least you can expect is a dead cylinder. Worst-case scenarios include broken rocker arms, broken valves, cracked heads, a damaged cam or complete engine destruction.

The hydraulic lifter may be having problems with a sticking check valve, dirt, wear or other problems. A faulty hydraulic lifter will usually result in the rocker arm, valve tip and push rod also going bad if left unattended. If your car has the above symptoms, replace it as soon as possible to avoid further damaging your engine. Customers can find the product you need accurately according to the OE number.
