Motor oil is made from crude oil and is used to lubricate, clean, and cool engines. Types of motor oil include conventional, synthetic, diesel, bio-based, hybrid (blends of conventional and synthetic), and recycled oils. Motor oil varies in weight and viscosity, as well as additives that some manufacturers add to the oil during the refining process. A numerical code system created by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) grades motor oils according to viscosity--the higher the number between 0 and 60, the more viscous (thicker) the oil is. Most consumer motor oils are graded by two numbers, with the first number indicating cold weather (Winter or "W") performance.
SAE 5W-30
This oil has a weight of SAE 5W-30, meaning it has an SAE viscosity rating of 5 in cold temperatures and a rating of 30 at normal operating temperature. Always check your vehicle's owner's manual to verify that this is the correct weight of motor oil for your vehicle.
Conventional Motor Oil
This oil is a conventional motor oil, meaning it is refined from crude oil or petroleum products. Conventional motor oils may or may not have additives included after refining. Conventional motor oils are more versatile than synthetic or hybrid motor oils, because they are suitable for use with nearly all types of modern vehicle engines, from cars and trucks to motorcycles, ATVs, farm equipment, and more.
High Mileage Oil
This oil is primarily designed for use in high-mileage cars and trucks, including both older vehicles and new vehicles that see heavy long-distance use. Extra additives are included to minimize compression loss, and to condition rubber seals and gaskets to prevent fluid leakage in older or high-mileage vehicles.

Valvoline's MaxLife Higher Mileage Motor Oil - Fight the Four Major Causes of Engine Breakdown
Keeping your higher mileage car on the road means doing everything you can to protect it from engine breakdown.
MaxLife motor oil extends the life of higher mileage engines by fighting the four major causes of breakdown--leaks, deposits, sludge and friction. The synthetic blend formula contains our Multi-Life additive system designed to combat these problems unique to older engines. In fact, no leading conventional motor oil is formulated to protect higher mileage engines better.
Engine breakdown is a greater risk when you demand more from your engine. Higher mileage motor oil lasts longer and provides your engine with the added protection it needs so you can keep your engine running smoothly.
Frequently Asked Questions About Valvoline's MaxLife
What is the difference between MaxLife Synthetic Blend motor oil and MaxLife Synthetic motor oil?
MaxLife Synthetic Blend combines synthetic and conventional motor oils to improve performance and gas mileage without having to convert to a full synthetic formula. MaxLife Synthetic motor oil is fully synthetic and offers the greatest protection available.
I mixed MaxLife Synthetic Blend and MaxLife Synthetic; will this cause a problem?
Mixing synthetic and synthetic blended oils will not cause any problems. The oils are compatible.
Do I have to wait until my car reaches 75,000 miles before I can use MaxLife?
Valvoline MaxLife motor oil is designed for high mileage vehicles of 75,000 miles or more. However, it is perfectly acceptable for use in new or used vehicles with less than 75,000 miles.
My owner's manual says to only use motor oil featuring the American Petroleum Institute (API) starburst. I don't see it on the MaxLife bottle. Is it still ok to use in my car?
MaxLife is formulated with specialized additives that help fight the problems typically found in higher mileage engines. Because MaxLife's formula is focused for maximum performance in stopping the four major causes of engine breakdown - Leaks, Deposits, Sludge, and Friction - it was not formulated to exceed API criteria for fuel economy (also known as the API starburst on packaging labels). However, the difference between average fuel economy results for MaxLife and other motor oils that meet the API criteria is still very minimal. More importantly, if you want the extra protection that MaxLife offers then you can use MaxLife in any vehicles that specifies enhanced fuel economy motor oils (API starburst).
Valvoline's Engine Guarantee Program can cover your engine if it fails |
Yes. The Valvoline Engine Guarantee covers your engine if it fails, hassle free. If you have 125,000 miles or less, using Valvoline's MaxLife can give you an engine guarantee up to 225,000 miles. Registration required, visit www.engineguarantee.com to learn more.
Has MaxLife always been a synthetic blend?
MaxLife Synthetic Blend motor oil is actually the same product as regular MaxLife. MaxLife has always been a synthetic blend oil; we just now label the product that way. It is the same oil as before. As long as you have used MaxLife, you have used synthetic blended oil.
Once MaxLife is installed in my car, how long does it take for the oil to start sealing and protecting my engine?
The oil will start conditioning seals immediately. Other protective benefits vary by vehicle.
Technical Specs
MaxLife is formulated with extra anti-wear additives to exceed the engine protection requirements of ILSAC GF-3 and GF-4, and API SL/SM standards and is safe for use in new and rebuilt engines, and will not void new car warranties.
